Sarasota Update – Choosing Art for Our Condo

January 3, 2016

Frank and I are back in Sarasota and ready to hang our new artwork in the condo. We are very happy with our choices – so how did we choose the art that we will love forever? I’ll give you some hints on what I’ve learned as we picked out several pieces for our new home.

Art in the Bed Room – We had a nook in the bedroom that was just the right size for a small desk. We hung the art over this built-in desk that we had made from antique corbels.

Probably the most important thing is to see many different pieces of art and artists. Visit galleries and take time to experience the many styles available. We are very fortunate in Sarasota with all the numerous galleries here. There is truly art for everyone’s taste.

Artwork for the Living Room – This is the first piece of our new artwork that you see when you enter the condo. It was also the first piece we chose, called “Sailing Off”.

If you discover an artist that you like, see if can visit the artist’s studio. Frank and I saw local Sarasota artist Lori Simon’s work and liked what we saw, so we emailed her and were invited to her studio. We were able to see so many more of her works there then we would have seen in a gallery and loved everything, as we knew we would!

Art for the Kitchen – This piece fits into this small space perfectly and adds some color to this corner of the room.

Don’t buy something just because it is recommended by a gallery owner, friend, or online reviews. Art is personal and possibly a huge investment so it needs to speak directly to you. If you are buying with your husband like I was, make sure that you both love it.

If possible, buy art with a special occasion in mind or even during a trip. You will always remember the piece.

Remember, it should be fun!

P.S. I counted at least a dozen art galleries in downtown Sarasota, some of my favorites being on State Street. If you visit, here is a site for art galleries in Sarasota.

Thank you for the list of galleries in Sarasota. I live in the area and will certainly check some of them out. We are so fortunate to live in this area as it is filled with so many talented artists, many who attended Ringling School of Art.
